These days when I hear “Machine Gun Kelly”, one of my favorite Memphis Roller Derby divas comes to mind. The original Machine Gun Kelly (George Kelly Barnes) was a famous bank robber during the prohibition era. He grew up in Memphis, attended Mississippi State for a while, picked up a machine gun, had a daring life of crime, and was captured in Memphis in 1933. The midtown house where he grew up is still around, as is the midtown house where he was captured. You can figure out which is which.
[Correction: Machine Kelly was a bootlegger and kidnapper - probably not a bank robber]
